Can Your Business Run Without You?
As you read this, I’m probably on a morning walk by the water… or relaxing on the beach… or sneaking dessert before breakfast (no judgment, we’re on vacation 🙃).
We made it to Florida for our annual beach trip. It only took an 8-hour drive in a packed van with my parents, the kids, too many snacks, and a car full of beach supplies.
And I’ll be honest, it feels really good to step away.
But getting here? That was a whole thing.
The days before we left were full of juggling… client calls, last-minute emails, and setting up the business so we could truly unplug. On top of that, we were shopping for sunglasses, making sure the car wouldn’t break down on our long drive, and prepping the crew for the road trip.
If you’ve ever tried to “relax” while managing a business, you know this dance.
You want to rest, but stepping away feels harder than just staying plugged in.
And that’s exactly the challenge one of our clients brought to us earlier this year.
One client's path to more freedom
One client’s path to more freedom
This client runs a successful e-commerce business. Strong revenue. Solid profit. No major fires.
But he wanted out of the day-to-day without taking a pay cut.
“I want to work less,” he said. “But I still need to take home the same amount.”
So we sat down, ran the numbers, and reverse-engineered a plan to make it happen.
Kept his $740K annual take-home pay
Hired $150K worth of contractor support
Made a few small but mighty shifts
That was it. No dramatic overhaul. Just targeted adjustments that added up.
Now? He’s still earning well and spending less time inside the business.
Want to work less and still get paid?
Here’s where to start: Figure out how much you actually want to take home this year.
Don’t worry about what your business is currently doing. Don’t stress about spreadsheets (yet).
Just ask yourself: “What do I need to earn to feel secure, steady, and free to live the life I want?”
What is it? Is it $150K? $400K? $750K? Write it down! That number becomes your anchor.
From there, you can start reverse-engineering the business to support it. Just like we did in our case study.
Then ask: Is your business built to support that without burning you out?
If the answer is murky, you’re not alone. But clarity starts there.

I recorded a short case study showing exactly how we helped this client redesign his business down to the numbers, targets, and thought process.

So while we soak up some sunshine and breathe a little deeper this week, I hope this gives you a glimpse of what’s possible when your business is built to serve you.
