Two goals, one big reminder

Two goals, one big reminder

This past weekend, my 6 year old son scored not one, but two goals in his soccer game.

It was only the second game of the season and you should have seen the look on his face afterwards.

Pure joy. His eyes lit up. Arms shot up in the air. He ran around like he just won the World Cup.

Scoring wasn’t just luck. He has been practicing almost every day after school. And he has been trying for multiple seasons to make one in. Kicking, missing, kicking again. But he kept at it.

And when the moment finally came, he didn’t just celebrate, he knew he earned it.

And here is what it got us talking about…

How many business owners earn their money but then never really get to keep it?

You put in the work. You land the client. You close the sale.

But then…

  • Expenses sneak in like weeds

  • Profit margins feel razor thin

  • Taxes show up like a bad surprise

It’s like scoring two goals and then watching the scoreboard stay stuck at zero.

Here’s the hard truth:

Revenue is meaningless if you don’t get to keep enough of it. And that’s what too many business owners overlook.

They focus on making more, but not on keeping more.

If that has been you lately, don’t beat yourself up. It is a fixable problem.

And the fix usually starts with these 3 simple shifts:

  1. Know your numbers. Profit doesn’t magically appear. You’ve got to track what is coming in and what is going out – with clarity.

  2. Plug your financial leaks. Small recurring charges, high payroll, and software you forgot you even had – it all adds up, and fast.

  3. Treat profit like a habit, not a leftover. Set it aside first. Build a system where your business pays you – not just your team, your vendors, and your tax bill.

Because at the end of the day, you started this business for freedom. Not just a full calendar.

And just like our kid’s smile after those goals, you deserve to feel the win.

As a reminder, put simply, profit is what’s left after your business earns money and covers all of its expenses. This matters because most people treat profit like it’s supposed to show up at the end. In reality, profit is a decision, not a leftover.

You have to choose to prioritize it. You have to build it into your system. Otherwise, you’ll always feel like you’re working hard, but never really getting ahead.

If this struck a nerve and you want to keep more of your hard earned money, I’d love to chat with you. We can talk about what has been feeling tight, messy, or unclear with your numbers lately. I’ll point you in the right direction (no pressure, no judgment).

Here’s to scoring real wins in your business.
