Building A Business That Supports Your Life

I rescheduled the HVAC company. That’s how serious I was.

Last week was my birthday, and for the first time in a long while… I actually took the whole day off.

I blocked my calendar. I moved calls. I even postponed the HVAC appointment, despite the fact that the AC in my office is currently not working.

And you know what?

It was one of the most energizing things I’ve done in a while.

Kris and I went out to lunch and saw a movie. I picked up a silly little fidget toy shaped like a balloon animal dog (because… why not?). Then we had dinner and cake with the kids and my family.

It was a simple day. Nothing extravagant. But it reminded me: This is what I want more of.

Not just the occasional break. But a life that actually feels like mine.

A business that funds your life, not one that drains it

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but your business should serve your life, not consume it.

So many entrepreneurs we work with feel like their business is running them.

They’ve built something that’s profitable (on paper), in demand, and respected… But it’s also demanding, chaotic, and exhausting.

Here’s the truth most folks won’t say out loud:

If your business only works when you sacrifice your life, your time, and your peace… it’s not actually working.

The good news?

This isn’t about burning it all down and starting over. It’s about making intentional shifts. Especially in how you manage the money side of things.

So, how do you know if you’re on track?

Here are two ways to check if your business is funding your life:

1️⃣ Do a 3-month personal pay review

Go back through the last 3 months of distributions or owner’s pay.

Ask: Have I paid myself consistently? Is it enough to meet my needs without dipping into personal savings or credit?

2️⃣ Calculate your “Life-First Profit” number

Take your total monthly personal expenses (the real number, not the wishful one). Add taxes, business overhead, and a small buffer.

That number? That’s the baseline your business needs to hit consistently to actually support you, not just stay afloat.

If you’re falling short, that’s not a failure.

It’s a signal. And signals are great because they give you a place to start.

If this hit close to home, let’s talk it through.
