The $22,000 leak that no one saw coming

Last week, I got one of those letters no homeowner wants to see.

It was from our neighborhood HOA, and it started out pretty routine. But about halfway through the letter, our eyes landed on the number.

$22,367

Apparently, there had been a major water leak underground. No puddles, no warning signs. Just a slow, steady drip, running 24/7… for months.

By the time anyone noticed, the damage was done. We’re now on the hook for the full repair, and everyone’s scrambling to figure out how to save money elsewhere to cover the cost.

The kicker?

The HOA is now reviewing every vendor relationship and proposal to find cheaper alternatives. Not because they wanted to, but because they have to.

It got me thinking…

Most business owners don’t have “floods” in their finances.

There’s no dramatic $50k disaster you can point to. No alarm bells ringing. No line item labeled “bad decision” on your P&L.

But just like that underground pipe, money can slowly leak out of your business without you noticing.

And by the time you do? The damage is already done.

The invisible drip

Here are just a few ways we see this show up with our clients:

  • A subscription that auto-renews for a tool you stopped using months ago
  • A “profitable” service that barely breaks even after you factor in delivery time, revisions, and team costs
  • Discounting just to close the deal (and training clients to expect it)
  • A bloated software stack where five tools overlap and none are optimized
  • Projects that creep outside of scope, but not inside your pricing

On their own, these don’t seem like big deals.

But multiply them over 12 months? That’s your $22,000 water bill waiting to happen.

Here’s how to spot them:

This simple exercise can uncover thousands in hidden costs:

  1. Pull your last 3 months of expenses
  2. Highlight anything you haven’t reviewed or questioned recently
  3. Ask yourself: “Would I make this decision again today?”

If the answer is no? You’ve found a leak. Cancel it. Renegotiate it. Redesign it. But don’t let it keep dripping.

We do this every day with founders who are bringing in solid revenue, but still aren’t seeing the profit (or clarity) they expected.

Because here’s the truth: If your business has hidden leaks, earning more won’t fix the problem. It just accelerates the drip.

So let me ask… What’s quietly costing you more than you realize right now?

And, if you’re ready to find (and fix it), book a free session with us. We’ll dig into your numbers, spot the leaks, and map out how to keep more of what you make.
